Tahoe Weather Information

During the Summer months, there are gererally prevailing Southwesterly winds each day at Tahoe. As the Sacramento Valley heats up, the cooler air of the coast is drawn into the valley. These winds come over the Sierra reaching the Tahoe Basin, on the average day, sometime between 10:00AM and 2:00PM. The windspeed can vary between 10 to 30 MPH.

It usually takes 1 to 2 hours for these winds to spread across the lake. The windward side of the lake stretches from Carnelian Bay on the North Shore around the East Shore and encompasses most of the South Shore by late afternoon. A dark blue line can be seen coming across the lake as the winds move from the West Shore (leeward side) towards the windward side of the lake. This is the dreaded "blue line" that Tahoe boaters have to deal with usually on a daily basis. The afternoon winds can create hazardous boating conditions as the lake becomes very rough. Lake waves are usually steep and close together. A small boat can take a pounding and be easily swamped by such conditions.

Safety steps:

1. Check and monitor the weather channel on your VHF radio. Do not go boating if high winds are forecast or if the small craft flag is flying at the marina.
2. Always keep a sharp eye across the lake for the "blue Line".
3. Begin your return trip across the lake when you first spot the "blue line. If you wait until you feel the wind on your face it is usually too late for a comfortable trip back to your destination.
4. Put life fackets and warm, wind proof clothing on all passengers.
5. If you find yourself caught in windy rough conditions, carefully point your bow into the wind, slow down your boat speed and traverse the waves (at a 45 degree angle). Do not take them head on as this will create pounding and radical boat gyrations.
6. Make sure that all passengers have a hand hold on the boat at all times. Hold on to small children.
7. Take your time. Do not try to hurry.

Afternoon thunderstorms also present dangerous boating conditions at Tahoe. High winds associated with a thunderstorm can suddenly turn a tranquil lake into churning waves and blinding spray in a matter of minutes. Even thundersorms that appear a "safe" distance away can generate gusty winds and large waves.

All thunderstorms produce dangerous lightning. Lightning is attracted to tall objects. On Tahoe, in your boat...that tall object is probably you! When thunderstorms threaten, get off the lake immediately and seek safe shelter.

If a thunderstorm catches you while afloat, follow the safety steps above and add the following:

1. Stay below deck if possible.
2. Keep away from metal objects that are not grounded to the boat's protection system.
3. Do not touch more than one grounded object at the same time.

Boating at Tahoe is a very memorable experience and wonderful family affair so long as you pay attention to the wind and weather conditions. IF YOU DON'T, IT WILL BE A DAY YOU WON'T SOON FORGET.
